None of it's a problem, but it does need planning rather than turning up with a van.
What's involved
- Access sorted in advance — parking, lift use, and where materials can be stored without blocking a communal hallway.
- Working hours that respect the community. Most urbanisations have a siesta-period restriction, and it's honoured.
- Protection of communal areas. Sheets down in the hallway and lift, and cleaned at the end of each day. Your neighbours shouldn't be able to tell work is going on.
- Full interior decoration — walls, ceilings, doors, frames and skirting.
- Terrace and balcony walls where they're within your property.
- Washable finishes in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways.

Do we need permission from the community?
For interior work, no. For anything on a terrace, balcony or external face, check with the administrator first — some communities specify colours or require notice.
Can it be done between rental bookings?
Yes, and it's very common. Give the dates you need it finished by and it'll be quoted around them. See holiday home and rental painting.
We're not in Spain. Can you get keys from a keyholder?
Yes. Plenty of jobs are arranged that way with an agent, neighbour or management company.
Will it smell?
Modern water-based paints have very little odour and it clears within a day or so with the windows open — which matters more in an apartment than a villa.
